Solace London is one of my latest and favorite discoveries filed under go-to online shops. You won't find many bold or flashy prints among the brand's contemporary offerings; rather, it's the architectural details and modern elegance that make the brand stand out. And it turns out I am in good company. The brand has been sported by a slew of models and starlets from Jennifer Lopez to Chrissy Teigen. Full disclosure: I discovered the brand when I saw this image of Kendall Jenner. Say what you will about Kardashian-Jenners, but this girl has style. But more importantly, CHRISSY TEIGEN. Since we are practically BFFs, here she is wearing the same rust and white striped jacquard fabric as me but in skirt form.
As if emulating beautiful and sharp-witted Chrissy Teigen isn't reason enough to shop Solace London, it is also surprisingly affordable for a celeb favorite. And lucky you, they are currently having a SALE. Read on for important info on shopping the website.
Sizing: Being a UK brand, SL uses UK sizing. A UK 4 is a US 0. After careful consideration and reading reviews, I went with a 4 for my items. Unfortunately, I seem to be more of a 6 in this brand. The good news is that I made this mistake so you don't have to! For reference I am 5"2 (157.5 cm) and 108 lbs (49 kgs). The printed culottes below (last photo) are stretchy and required no altering. The jacquard pants above and the printed shorts below (photos 5 & 6) were easy to alter myself by removing the darts (vertical seams in the back that create shape). The dress below and the white top required professional altering. Yes, even the top because apparently models have pencil-thin necks (or I have a big neck?) and I had to expand the neck hole.
Shipping: Shipping to Canada costs about 25 USD or £17. The one bothersome thing about shopping this brand is that I'm not lucky enough to be located in the UK, thus incurring hefty customs and import duties that are not included in the cost of shipping, which has prevented me from shopping many online retailers in the past. Ultimately I ended up paying about 92 USD (or 117 CAD) for customs and import duties. Fortunately, the sale prices were such a steal that the total cost was still a great deal compared to paying full price, and nothing was going to stop me from owning this black cocktail dress with a plunging neckline.
Alternatively, you could purchase Solace London items from one of its stockists that ships to the US or elsewhere without the startling fees. More on that below.
Quality: These items are made from a variety of fabrics, all of which look and feel as high-quality in person as they do in the photographs. Everything is well-made with attention to detail. If it's possible, the jacquard striped trousers look even more luxurious in person.
